The Dirty Strangers

West 12 to Wittering  (another West Side Story)

by Charlotte Schultz

The Dirty Strangers have another album out now called West 12 to Wittering released on the Track Records.

In 1987 they did their first album and with succes. Now another album is released, and they do it again.

Here is what Track Records write:

THE DIRTY STRANGERS Somewhat of an enigma.

Who are these guys that can get members of the biggest rock band in the world to play on their albums? A good time rock & roll band from Shepherd Bush', that's who they are. The Dirty Strangers first album was released in 1987. It featured KEITH RICHARDS, RONNIE WOOD, the late PAUL FOX (formerly of The Ruts) MICKEY GALLAGHER (of Ian Durys Blockheads) and band founder and the man responsible for putting these guys togther, ALAN CLAYTON. The new album WEST 17 to WITTERING (another West Side Story) released this Spring also features KEITH and RONNIE plus the legendary JOE BROWN. Somewhat of a pastiche of the Arthur Laurents story, (just swap Shepherds Bush for New York) Clayton writes his own musical influenced by personal life experiences that embraces gang culture, hoodlums, isolation, liberty, motors, and love story's. At times, Clayton sounds uncannily similar to Mick Jagger.. he sports a raunchy, low-growlish tone, the rhythm section is solid a la late Seventies' Stones but with elements of punkish abandon. On this album, Keith plays piano and leaves all guitar playing to his good friend Clayton, bar Ronnie Wood playing bottleneck on two tracks. Joe Brown guests on All Away. Joe's son Pete produced this album bar Real Botticelli which was produced by former Damned founder member, Brian James.

I got the album the other day, and I must say, I love it a lot. The musicians Alan Clayton on guitar and vocals, John Proctor on the bass guitar, George Butler on the drums and Scottie Mulvey on Piano Accordian on two tracks and organ on another.

But the guest apperances here from KEITH RICHARDS on piano on All Away, Aint That Too Much, Survival Dance, She's A Real Boticelli and Bad Girls are excellent.

Joe Brown comes along with his banjo on All Away.

RONNIE WOOD on slide guitar on South Of The River and Gold Cortina. Great played of Ronnie.

Other guests are Pete Brown and Chris Winter.

Tracklisting:

Talk To Me

Aint That Too Much

South Of The River

Liberty Smile

All Away

Bad Girls (You're Going Nowhere)

She's A Real Botticelli

Love For Life

Survival Dance

Don't Come Easy

Gold Cortina

Nowhere Maybe

Just Another Story

My personal favorites are Ain't That Too Much where Keith plays, and South Of The River with Ronnie. But they are all served very well and fresh, I have played it since Saturday around 10 times, and another 10 will be too, the next days.

A brilliant album which can be ordered from Track Record homesite:

Enjoy the Dirty Strangers - they are a good summer warm up for a pleasant show, they show at the moment in UK.

The first time we met the Blues

On May 31, 2009 Music Mentor Books of York, England are set to publish a book that will be of immense interest to Rolling Stones fans.  Subtitled "A journey of discovery with Jimmy Page, Brian Jones, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards", THE FIRST TIME WE MET THE BLUES is a fascinating account of the early days of the British blues scene.  The author, respected blues writer David Williams, was a childhood friend of Jimmy Page, and is therefore able to provide many first-hand insights into Jimmy's formative years as a guitarist and some great anecdotes about his early bands.

As the boys' passion for the blues grew, they befriended other teenage enthusiasts – among them Brian Jones, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards – becoming part of a movement that ultimately brought about the '60s rock revolution.  Williams describes how he first got to know Brian when he was still living in Cheltenham, seeing him perform with Alexis Korner at the Ealing Club, the gestation of the Rolling Stones, their earliest influences and plenty more besides.  A couple of handwritten letters from Brian are also reproduced in the book.

The book culminates with a detailed account of a momentous expedition by van from London to Manchester to see the American Folk-Blues Festival in October 1962 – the first time ever that Williams and his pals had an opportunity to see legendary American bluesmen like T‑Bone Walker, Willie Dixon and John Lee Hooker in action – and an assessment of its far-reaching aftermath.

A review of the book will come as soon as possible.

Lee “Scratch” Perry Continues To Ride On A Megawave Of Dub Conquering

By Phyllis Pollack

With over fifty albums to his name, Jamaican born Grammy-winning reggae legend Lee “Scratch” Perry has released Scratch Came, Scratch Saw, Scratch Conquered on Megawave Records, joined by notable guests Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards and groove master George Clinton. Throughout this album, produced by John Saxon for State Of Emergency Limited, the Upsetter, who has enigmatically recorded under numerous pseudonyms, follows a musical tradition that is distinctly all his own. “Scratch” continues to experiment, interweaving diverse styles and rhythm patterns, resulting in his own brand of reggae artistry, through the use of his unique pallet of sounds, and often idiosyncratic lyrics. Goodbye to Runar Juliusson

By Charlotte

It is a big lost for Iceland and Keflavik that Runar Juliusson passed so suddenly away last week.

Runar Juliusson was a a symbol and big legend on Iceland for rock'n'roll.

Our Icelandic friend Hjalti met Runar many times, the last words he said to Runar was we have to turn our back together and stand close because of pretty hard times at Iceland at the moment, and he agreed.

Runar was playing at Rainn and was reaching for his guitar backstage getting ready to perform, when he felt some ill in the heart, and he felt down, an ambulance was called and Runar was declared dead at the Landspitalinn Hospital in Reykjavik.

Hjalti met him a lot, and he was a very good bass player and learned a lot from Bill Wyman. He was a big fan of The Rolling Stones.

Here are two videos from youtube.com: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Th3DlWQ12lQ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdCcZsbyqB0

Rest in peace Runar.

The Rolling Stones Paint It Black On Upcoming Shine A Light DVD/Blu-ray

By PHYLLIS POLLACK

Hollywood, California

Even if you have already seen Shine A Light in a theater, there is an upcoming DVD/Blu-ray package slated for release that is still worthy of buying. So you think you’ve seen the Light? Think again.

When Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese’s Rolling Stones concert documentary Shine A Light was released on April 4, its theatrical run in both Imax and conventional theaters was limited to a select number of theaters due to its documentary format. Therefore, countless fans still have not yet seen this critically acclaimed film, documenting performances from the largest grossing concert tour of all time. However, they will finally be able to do so when Shine A Light is released on DVD/Blu-ray on July 29.

Because I had seen Shine A Light prior to its theatrical release, and had written reviews on it, in addition to the fact I had both attended and written extensively about the Rolling Stones press conference that was held in New York for the film, and I had interviewed the Rolling Stones on the red carpet (which was actually black) at the NY premiere, I wanted to go full circle, and review what is in the DVD package, aside from what is included in it that was seen in its theatrical release. Therefore, the focus here will be on the package’s added features, because I have already reviewed the theatrical release it contains. Read more here----->>>
